    • @Anna133199 sure it is. Can you blame me for saying it, the migration propaganda is pushed on us from every side, especially the media.

      Slav NatSlav Nat8 ngày trước
    • No, there's no white guilt. I'm so tired of people thinking that every film with refugees in it is somehow migration propaganda. The film is about their own survivor's guilt.

  • The only problem with this entire movie is they got what the UK was like to foreigners wrong. They're given everything; more money than shown, better housing than shown (and then THEY ruin it), are allowed to work and in general have more than what actual CITIZENS of the UK have. But other than that... Good movie.

  • I always kinda saw this as a metaphor for PTSD, the tragedies of what's going on in Sudan (other war turn countries are unfortunately abundantly available), and harsh treatment towards immigrants for being...Well immigrants. The first comment section I read had at least half the people saying how the people in this have no national pride, and should have been loyal to a country that is trying to ethnically cleanse them...

  • This movie was amazing. We use it as material for sensibilization towards the refugee's cause. Works awfully well. It's a damn good metaphore towards a survivor's suffering.

    jotabeas22jotabeas22Tháng trước
  • More than social, political or ghostly theme this is a psychological horror, because it picks on the survivor's guilt of the couple, the horrors that only them survived, how many people they saw die over and over and over again, yet they still reached their destination. Why? Why them and not the others? It is quite painful to accept the guilt, not only of what they had to do but what they didn't do, like asking the car to stop, for the mother to be included, or trying to save not only themselves from drowning. They're not evil but they are not "good", and they have to accept that, to gain the strength necessary to fight the witch. Now, about the witch itself, they never explain if it's a person or an entity, and why does it appear. Was it born from their own regrets?, Babadook style, or did it come from the dead souls? or maybe, from the mother, whether she made a pact with the entity to chase down her daughter's kidnappers or was her soul when she died that morphed into the witch. There's many options there depending on the believes the writers and director based the story in. But there's another point that I found really interesting, the unnerving horror of loosing yourself, because the guy was not only loosing himself by denying his guilt, he was also trying to erase all his past, all he lost, what he dreamed and hoped before, everything is blocked and painted with an unrealistic world view, what he believes is their "new home". Because it feels like you're betraying your community, your blood, your old believes and ancestors. There's a very classic theme of unbelievers getting tough a lesson on ancestral culture. Part of moving forward is not really letting go of everything, but accepting what happened, carrying the precious memories and making them armor to fight the regrets, fears and pain (aka the witch). As someone that has immigrated twice, one running from a horrible/dying economy and then from a gang, violence and unemployment ridden country I can understand how it feels to not "fit in". At some point you believe you have to let go of what is yours, what it meant to be "you" so you can have an EASIER life, but that only creates a whole, growing bigger and bigger the more you twist and bend yourself to fit in. That can cause a lot of regret, fear and pain, fueling the "witch". It also makes you vulnerable. There's a lot to unpack from that movie, so the social and political can feel quite unimportant, yet they're still present. I'm Peruvian but when I was 7 I moved with my family to Guatemala, another Spanish speaking country. You would believe because we share the language and some customs I would have a good time there, make friends easily, right?. Nope, not at all. I suffered bullying through all my compulsory education, elementary, high school, even during my first year in Uni. My accent never became "like theirs", I never fitted in, always doing things differently so I gave them reason for mockery and discrimination, or so I thought. Discrimination in any way, be it racism, phobias, or else, never comes from an actual physical reason. It's not because of an accent, skin color, habits, etc. It comes from the idea of "them and us". "They are less than us", "they are gonna hurt us", "They can't understand us". So it doesn't matter if they are young like the kid she finds, or old, like the neighbor he tries a couple times to be friendly with. Or if they look like you, like the 3 youngsters that mocked her. But she is also falling in that same line of thought, she doesn't want to fit with "them", she wants her husband and herself to "return their roots" to remain "us". That's why at the end, to move forward she has to "let go" of the girl's hand, aka her past, her culture, not only her guilt. She won't stop seeing them, being part of all that, but she's able to grow, change and feel more herself.

As long as theres something different about someone compared to the group this will always happen, and the alternative is a hive mind which is just boring. So this way it will remain, till the day when all are one. If anyone gets that reference.
